Political Advertising Breaking the Law on Ambergris Caye

Over the weekend there has been a vast proliferation of political advertising and bunting attached to the BEL poles. This is apparently against the law and BEL has said  so many times.

It will be interesting to see if the political figures order these signs etc. to be taken down and placed in places which are legal or will they just ride roughshod over this minor detail.

How to Avoid Heartworm Disease in Your Dog

In the past week we have tested dogs which have been positive for heartworm disease despite receiving heartworm prevention.  This is also increasingly being reported in the United States.

Heartworm preventative such as Heartgard is still the best way to protect your pet.  Studies have not shown one brand to be more effective than another. Regardless of the brand you are giving, be sure that you give it religiously every month.  It is also wise to give the preventative to your dog personally, rather than delegating it to someone else.  At SPAH we always send home the heartworm preventative with the owner unless we have been specifically requested to give the tablet in the hospital or during a grooming appointment.  We also weigh the pet each time to make sure that the proper dose is being given.  If your pet is a weight which is border-line between two different sizes of Heartgard always give the larger size.  In other words, it is better to give too much than too little.  Heartgard has a tiny dose of ivermectin within it, so it is very safe.  On the other hand, if you are giving the liquid form of ivermectin drawn up in a syringe, you must be extremely careful with the amount you give.  This product is actually made for cattle, so it is very strong and dangerous for your dog if given outside the dosage range.  An overdose of this formulation of ivermectin can easily be lethal to a dog or cat.

And finally, have your dog tested for heartworm disease once a year, even if you are following all the instructions listed above.  Dogs which test positive early in the disease process are much more likely to survive.

If you have any questions or would like to have your dog tested for heartworm disease please call or visit the San Pedro Animal Hospital.  Heartworm tests are currently only $50 a piece while supplies last.

This is a Truly Scary Story

olice Constable charged with two counts of rape
Saturday, 14.01.2012, 01:44pm (GMT-6)

By Rowland A. Parks

Staff Reporter

Police Constable Lincoln Lewis Jr., 28, of Seine Bight Village, was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer on two counts of rape and one count of escape from lawful custody on Thursday, January 5.

Magistrate Frazer  offered him bail of $8,000 plus two sureties of $4,000 each, and she adjourned his case until February 16.

The court prosecutor had objected to Lewis’ bail because the victim complained that PC Lewis had threatened her  via text messages and had made threatening phone calls to her.

But PC Lewis’ attorney, Sharon Pitts Robateau, argued that bail was Lewis’ right and that her client had told her that the complainant did not even have a cell phone, so she could not have been threatened by the use of a cell phone.

Pitts-Robateau also submitted that she had cautioned her client on the grounds under which bail would be granted and she believes he understands the seriousness of the conditions.

PC Lewis was not required to enter a plea, because rape is an indictable offence that would be heard in the Supreme Court, after a preliminary inquiry is held.

PC Lewis, however, pleaded not guilty to the escape from lawful custody charge.

According to police, on December 20, 2011 a 25-year-old Belize City woman reported that around 12 am PC Lewis had forced his way into her house and raped her.

She said Lewis also returned the following day; forced her into his van; took her to the Municipal Airstrip, and there he raped her a second time.

The magistrate and lawyer must be crackers.

Fido’s provide Tom with a Great Wake

Yesterday Fido’s and their friends sent Tom on his way to the unknown by providing the largest wake that the Ambergris Daily has ever been part of. From Gino,Dale,Tul, and Casper on the stage providing the music. To Cookie Lady who sang an unaccompanied rendition of “Tommy Boy” and to Brian who organized everything so well.

A big hand to Bruce and Nancy who together own Fido’s by pledging all the profit from the wake to be split evenly between SAGA and the San Pedro Animal Foundation which will obviously be a big benefit to Tom’s favorite charities.

What could have been a very somber occasion became a huge party with everyone telling their favorite “Tom” story. Our story was that on only one of his trips abroad. He flew to Germany just to visit the jagermeister factory. Let’s face it that is a long way to go for a pretty awful drink.

Stray Dogs Everywhere in San Pedro

There appears to be more and more stray dogs running around the streets of San Pedro. some even have clloars on. This maybe due to xmas is over and a popular present is a puppy or dog and then people find that they need a lot more looking after than they first thought. Also,of course, they are expensive to keep, with vet bills, food and general medicine like heart guard a total necessity. Some people just open their doors and throw the poor animals out on the streets.

Hopefully SAGA will do a roundup and catch these unfortunates and take them to the pound. There must have been over 10 dogs in the town yesterday, and there are many more past Grand Caribe.

Charlie and Jambo’s Weather Report on Ambergris Caye

It is overcast but should brighten up later on in the day and I suspect that the afternoon will be great.

Wow-When the Ambergris Daily makes a Mistake

Even Simon Backley got this one right. As everyone knows Berlin’s best selling song was “You take my breath away”, not as reported “every breath you take”. It is amazing how many people read this blog. Maybe we should put in more deliberate errors.

Anyway thanks for the emails and all people who sent them in win a rum punch which will be provided at Pedro’s.
