Guys in my line of work never get “lost.” So let’s just say I was disoriented. Away from home, down in Alabama driving on a road that was decidedly “off the beaten path” looking for a house that the Army said was there, but that I really didn’t think existed. As disoriented as I was driving, the last thing I needed was a phone call…when of course my phone started ringing. My night and my luck was about to change a bit when I saw it was Dave from Project Healing Waters.
Growing up in New England, you don’t hear too much about bonefish. Maybe on a snowy Sunday morning you might watch an older episode of the Walkers Caye Chronicles, but more often striped bass, bluefish, tuna and swordfish took center stage in the salt. The turquoise waters of the Caribbean bonefish flats were something that most of us only saw on TV or in magazines…yet here was Dave on the phone with an amazing opportunity, bonefishing in Belize. Bixby Rotary is shipping a sea container full of medical supplies and equipment to the country of Belize. This international effort is being coordinated with The Rotary Club of Belize. Belize is located at the lower tip of Mexico between Guatemala and Honduras.
The planning and gathering of the 7,200 pounds of medical supplies is being handled by the Medical Supplies Network, Inc. Medical Supplies Network, Inc. is a Rotary District 6110 Project that collects used and new supplies that are still working or in sterile packages. Medical Supplies Network, Inc. ships at least one 40-foot sea container every month out of the warehouse located at 1123 S. Erie in Tulsa. The warehouse is a vital extension of the program because so many supplies are packaged and loaded into containers. (Continue Reading)
Belize Natural Energy (B.N.E.) wants to be known not only for the oil it extracts from Belize’s soil and the estimated three hundred and thirty-four million dollars it profited in sales from 2005 to 2008. It also wants to be recognized for its contribution to the society. In 2008, the B.N.E. Charitable Trust was established to assist community organizations, and on March twenty sixth several communities and organizations received substantial monetary donations. Others institutions like St. Margaret Primary School on the Hummingbird Highway received not funds but a commitment. St. Margaret’s Principal, William Castillo, thanked BNE for the four classroom building that BNE has promised to construct at today’s ground breaking ceremony. (Continue Reading)
