Channel 5 Belize | The University of Belize (UB) through the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) and its partnership with the Mesoamerican Society for Biology and Conservation (MSBC) is hosting the fourth Annual Natural Resources Management (NRM) Research Symposium.
The two day symposium begins on Tuesday at the University of Belize (UB) Jaguar Auditorium, in Belmopan. The theme for this year’s symposium is: “Exchanging research knowledge to promote sound decision-making for natural resource management in Belize.”
Researchers from the ERI and UB NRM students will be joined by local and international counterparts conducting research in Belize to present their latest findings in the field of natural resources management. The symposium will include both oral and poster presentations on biodiversity conservation and the management of marine protected areas, as well as special invited guests discussing petroleum operations in Belize and the impact on the environment.
Every year the symposium presents a unique opportunity for natural resources managers and researchers to discuss the most recent developments in the field and contribute to the body of scientific knowledge needed to sustainably manage Mesoamerica’s natural resources.
Love FM | The fifth annual raise your flag and win with love competition starts today. Program Coordinator and Manager at RSV Limited, Karmen Barrow, tells us why this year’s competition is seeking the participation of all Belizeans.
Karmen Barrow; Manager, RSV Limited
“The competition has been ongoing for the past four years put on by Love FM. The concept for the competition was actually the brain child of one of our staff members Mrs. Alma Erskine. Since then it has really grown from strength to strength. Over the years we have seen more and more Belizeans across the country participating in raise you flag. The way the Raise You Flag Competition works is that we normally start off by doing what we did this morning on the morning show. We do an official launch which says and sends the signal to Belizean across the country that they need to get ready because we at RSV Media Limited are good to go.
What we do is that we travel across the country looking for businesses, looking for schools and homes where people have gone out of their way to raise the Belizean flag. What we are looking to see is the display of nationalism and patriotism by Belizean people. It doesn’t matter if it is the children, the business houses or individual people. Some people have put decorations on their bicycles, some of them put it on their nails, in their hair; different ways of displaying their nationalism and patriotism.”
The competition is open to all Belizeans and residents of the districts are encouraged to gear up for the competition. (Continue Reading)

San Pedro Sun | Summer stretches seemingly endlessly for children on the island. With no homework, hardly any chores to do, the vast sea calls them to spend as much time in the water as possible. But what about those who can’t swim, and can’t afford summer camp or lessons? Well, Reverend Julie Bradley and her team of about 10 volunteers from Los Angeles have been giving a bit of swimming lessons to local children at The Tides Hotel pool, and on Thursday, the fast learners had a fun trip to Hol Chan, to enjoy what their island offers…
Later that evening, they had Drum Circle, where kids and volunteers alike got to enjoy the primitive beats of the local Garifuna drums…kudos to the volunteers!!
Yahoo | Retirees in Belize are finding many interesting and sometimes lucrative ways to fill their days. Lara Lennon moved to Belize from Philadelphia in 2006 and developed a luxury swimwear line, Lemon Crush Belize. “Sitting on a friend’s porch in San Pedro chatting about this and that in our tropical lives, I realized something: There existed nowhere in Belize a place to shop for dress bathing suits, the kind glamorous enough for a beach wedding or special enough for a honeymoon,” Lennon says.
Lara’s swimwear is now featured in luxury boutiques in Belize and internationally. Starting a business takes drive and determination, Lara admits, but she has found the experience in Belize rewarding. “Best of all, I’m right where I want to be–with my friends on a Caribbean island, enjoying life,” Lennon says. “Only now in better bathing suits.”
Jason and Elizabeth Pearce moved from Canada to Belize three years ago. They bought a piece of property on the sea. A year later, they built a house. Today, they live in a beautiful Santa Fe adobe-style home with gardens all around.
The pair lives very comfortably, without wants or financial worries. They’ve had no trouble making friends in their new community because the folks in Belize speak English. They eat out three or four times a week. They barbecue lobster and filet mignon at home. They have reliable Internet to keep them connected to the outside world. By choice, they do not have a television. “I used to think that the news was important,” Jason explains. “But not anymore.” The retired couple has a maid and a gardener, each of whom visit once a week. Channel 5 Belize | Two US movie and television stars caused a stir at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital on Wednesday. Patients and visitors were excited to see Brody Hutzler of soap operas such as the Young and Restless and Days of Our Lives. He was accompanied by a film crew and Rudy Youngblood of the mega hit movie, Apocalypto. Both are in the Jewel working on a pilot for a United States television show called Hookup. Part of the deal is that they contribute to worthy causes, thus their appearance at the K.H.M.H. News Five’s Sanchez joined the film crew at the hospital.
Rudy Youngblood, the breakout star of the film Apocalypto, which chronicled a Mayan’s journey through Central American jungles to survive, made a surprise appearance at the pediatric ward of the K.H.M.H. earlier this week.

“This organization brought me down to do a little bit of fishing and also to deal with the patients here, the kids. I felt obligated to share with everyone what I’m passionate about and to uplift them and to never ever forget this moment that I’m gonna share with them.” (Continue Reading)
Channel 5 Belize | Tourism numbers seem to be picking up after a slow season. The livelihood of hundreds depends on the industry and everyone is after a slice of the pie. So a contract awarded by Carnival Cruise Line to provide shore excursions has angered local operators who claim it is preferential treatment. The Federation of Cruise Tourism Associations of Belize contends that what should be a local business is being subverted by foreign interests. At the beginning of last month the organization wrote Director of Tourism, Seleni Matus on the matter of a contract that is currently held by Bakabush Tours and its overseas affiliate Chukka Caribbean Adventures based in Jamaica. Among the assertions is that FECTAB believes the Chukka group owns majority shares in Bakabush Tours which is registered to Tom and Yvette Wilson. On the issue of exclusivity where it regards the vending of merchandise onboard Carnival excursions, the letter goes on to say “this practice serves to crowd out the small vendors at the sites such as Altun Ha, Lamanai, Xunantunich, et cetera. The small vendors are considered the backbone of an economy; if that sector of the market diminishes so does the overall economy”. CEO in the Ministry of Tourism, Mike Singh, says the issue seems to be more about the quality of service being provided by Bakabush Tours as opposed to other competing operators.
Mike Singh, CEO, Ministry of Tourism
“There seem to be an issue where there is a group of local operators led by an organization called FECTAB which I believe is led by Mr. Tom Greenwood. They’ve had several meeting with us expressing a concern that they feel that there’s one particular operator which operates in Belize under the name Bakabush Tours. (Continue Reading)
