AP | A jaguar that escaped from its cage at a Belize animal rescue centre during Hurricane Richard has been blamed in the mauling death of a U.S. citizen whose body was found on Tuesday. The 4-year-old male jaguar named Max escaped when a tree fell on his cage on Sunday, the same day the Category 1 hurricane hit the country’s Caribbean coast with howling winds and rain.
Authorities found the victim’s body near the animal centre on Tuesday. It had bite marks on the forearm and neck, and the man had apparently been attacked the day before and dragged for some distance into the bushes. Belize’s national police force identified the victim as Bruce Cullerton, an American who also held Belizean citizenship.
Kelly McCarthy, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Belize, confirmed that “a U.S. citizen died from a jaguar attack.” McCarthy could not provide any information on the man’s hometown or name.
The escaped jaguar had been sighted in the area of the attack near the centre, located west of Belize City. Officials of the Belize Forest Department were trying to recapture it using steel-mesh cage traps baited with meat. The 130-pound (59 kilogram) jaguar had been taken to rescue and research centre two years ago, after a tourist resort which had held the animal as an attraction gave it up after tourists complained.
The centre’s operators, Richard and Carol Foster, rescue animals and attempt to return many of them to the wild.

Hurricane Richard Damage
Channel 5 Belize | According to NEMO Coordinator, Noreen Fairweather, the preliminary assessment got underway with aerial reconnaissance and terrestrial teams in affected areas. The preliminary figures are at thirty-three point eight million dollars. That figure is on the low side but Fairweather says it does not take into account the tourism industry or the impact due to the loss of electricity. We note that more than two thirds of the damage comes from losses to the citrus industry in the south. Fairweather also presented a breakdown of the two hundred plus homes which were damaged by Richard.
Noreen Fairweather, NEMO Coordinator
“We have in terms of damages to homes, over almost two hundred homes—one hundred and fifty to two hundred homes. We are looking at some preliminary figures around three point six million dollars. Recovery works—speaking specifically the basic clearing of roads and highways, removal of trees and debris and putting things back in order countrywide—not recovery in terms of replacing any structural work that may have been done on road network: bridges, culvert etc. this is just recovery for the removal of the debris and things blocking roads, and our estimate for that is about one million. Throughout the passage of Hurricane Richard, we had about four thousand six hundred plus people in shelter. Unfortunately with some of those houses going down and people losing roof, sidings, there are persons to accommodate and support in shelter with relief supplies—feeding and bedding. And we have an estimate of a hundred thousand dollars that will meet those expenses given a certain time frame; we feel that we can get them back to some resemblance of normalcy. (more…)

Love FM | The public offering of shares in Belize Telemedia Limited was launched on Friday of last week. But controversy surrounding the company continues. Yesterday, the British Caribbean Bank, one of the many Ashcroft entities issued a statement refuting charges made by BTL’s Executive Chairman Nestor Vasquez that a twenty two million US dollar, purported to have been made by Belize Bank to Telemedia prior to the nationalization of the company was illegal and therefore null and void. Here is what the BTL Chairman Net Vasquez said at the public launch back on October fifteenth.
Net Vasquez; Chairman, BTL
“That loan, that US$25.5 million loan is listed in the books of Belize Telemedia, we found it there as a BZ$45 million loan. We have solid legal opinion that that loan was incurred unlawfully and it is void. We also mentioned in this offer for sale that that liability will be removed for two reasons. Reason number on being that is not a liability of the company anymore. It was taken over by the government, that is one and the second one is that the loan was unlawfully uncured. We have no plans and are making no arrangements to pay for it. We say also in the offer for sale that in the unlikely event that in the ultimate appellate court they happen to rule that it is a liability in that event the company plans to procure a loan to pay the government because that is an understanding that the Prime Minister made very clear to the company.”
The British Caribbean Bank statement said that the institution has obtained its own legal advice that the loan is lawful and it is simply wrong to say that no one has to pay. The statement goes back to say, and we quote: “even if the transaction is unlawful, then, as a matter of law, British Caribbean Bank is entitled to the reversal of that transaction and the return of its funds. End of quote. The BCB release ends by saying that the Bank is confident that It will recover its funds either as a result of its claim against the government of Belize for having expropriated its assets or though its challenge to the legislation which nationalized its interests and subsequent pursuit of Telemedia for the outstanding debt.

Love FM | The Belize Ex-Services League today launched the Scarlet Poppy appeal. The poppy is a symbol and tribute to all the men who lost their lives in World War I and II. This is the first activity leading up to a week of activities in honor of Veterans Week next month. President of the Belize Ex-services League, Bernard Adolphus, tells us more about the importance of remembering our war veterans and observing Veterans Week.
Bernard Adolphus; President, Belize Ex-services League
“Most of our men are senior citizens and they need help. Particularly what we are worried about is health care because we all know that the medical care is expensive. We get free attendance at the hospital and it is still being held true but medication is an expensive thing. The money that we collect from the poppys help us with well fair activity for example, purchasing medicine for these men. It is not only in Belize City; countrywide because we have a contingence in Punta Gorda, we have a contingence in Stann Creek, we have a group in Belmopan, we have a few in Cayo, we have some on Corozal and we have a few in Orange Walk. Whatever we do we do everything countrywide for our veterans because if it wasn’t for these men and women who went forward perhaps it would have been a different Belize. That the way I look at it and that’s the way everybody look at it.”
Every year, the Belize Ex-services league sets aside seven days in November in which to prepare for the remembrance of those who have made contributions toward the development of Belize. The poppy is symbolic and Bernard says we all should wear it proudly.
Bernard Adolphus
“I’m requesting the public to support the poppy campaign buy a poppy; wear a poppy. School children, grand parents and parents wear a poppy in a symbolic gesture in remembrance of those who have fallen, those who are still her and those who have made the sacrifice. We have to remember those people and I trust all the family members will come out and support this venture on that day. The Ex- Service League is still alive and kicking.”
