San Pedro’s Animal Hospital – Update on Poisoning

Rest In Peace, HavanaPosted: 04 Dec 2011 12:13 PM PST

Our deepest sympathies to Jeff and Vivian and the crew at Rojo Lounge.  There dog Havana passed away this morning in San Pedro Animal Hospital after a 72 hour battle against the toxin she was poisoned with.

Havana was a rescue puppy adopted from Saga Humane Society six years ago.  She spent her life as a beloved member of her family at Azul Resort, guarding her home outside every night.

She presented at San Pedro Animal Hospital on Wednesday with the signs of a mild to moderate neurotoxicity.  She was shaking uncontrollably and unsteady on her feet.  She was treated for two days in the hospital on IV fluids and medications, and showing improvement, she went home on Friday.  Unfortunately, on Sat am she returned with more severe symptoms.  As it turns out, the insecticide we suspect she was poisoned with causes degeneration of nerves in the brain and the rest of the body over time, causing progressive neurologic dysfunction.  In her case, her seizures became so severe that she developed a condition we refer to as “status”.   In this condition the patient never wakes up between seizures.  We treated her seizures all night last night, hoping that she would finally improve and awaken.  Unfortunately, this never happened and her condition continued to deteriorate.  This morning at 6am we had to concede that we had lost the battle against the neurotoxin, and Havana was put to rest.

I learned a lot from my treatment of Havana.  This was a new set of progressive symptoms in a poisoning victim, and it took time to work it out, but with research it appears that there are many possible insecticides that could have been used.  They are in the class of “cholinesterase inhibitors”.  This probably doesn’t mean much to the average person, but to veterinarians and doctors it explains a lot.  There is a special antidote to these type of toxins, which I have never seen or used before in the United States or Belize, but I remember learning about it way back in Toxicology class in veterinary school.  It is my hope that I will be able to acquire it on my next trip to America, and that San Pedro Animal Hospital will be prepared with it for the next incident of canine poisoning here in Belize.

Sometimes I feel that I am in a personal war against these nameless, faceless criminals, who periodically attack the canine members of our families with these poisonous substances.  This time the perpetrator won.  But next time I will be ready again for another fight, and the outcome may be different.  More often than not I have been able to save the victims that arrive at my clinic, but it is the ones that we do not save that stay with me.

This is the fourth dog the Azul Resort has lost this year, joining Siska and Carey who died of old age, and Gabby who died of kidney failure.  I hear that there will be a funeral today for Havana on their beautiful beach front property.  Words will be said.  Flowers and sand will go with Havana into her grave in the beautiful pet cemetary they are building.

A special thank you to Dr. Dan, a local family physician, who assisted us last night by supplying us with additional emergency medications.

Rest in peace, Havana.

Charlie and Jambo’s Weather Report

It is cloudy and there is a spit of rain in the air. It is not as cold as the last couple of days but the boss would think that it is bloody freezing.

We are expecting three long walks today as a couple of guests in the hotel think that Jambo and I are the best looking dogs on the island (that really goes without saying as that is a fact).

Cocaine bust in Belize

Police Bust Mexican With 300 Pounds Of Coke, About To Cross Northern Border
posted (December 2, 2011)

Tonight a Mexican is in police custody along with almost 300 pounds of cocaine – after a major bust yesterday evening at the Santa Elena border in Northern Belize. Here’s the information we’ve pieced together from multiple law enforcement sources: yesterday evening an alert police man was in a bus when he spotted a suspicious vehicle overtaking the bus. The vehicle was a Nissan pickup with Mexican plates hauling a small trailer, nothing suspicious in and of itself.

Except that this vehicle has been in and out of Belize recently, and caught the eye of police in Benque Viejo. That’s where it’s been observed coming into the country as often as twice a month since the middle of this year. And after coming in through Benque, the Mexican truck and its driver, 44 year old Martin Rafeal Machado heads straight for the Belize-Mexico border and crosses over there to his home country of Mexico. He carries with him – and dutifully checks into customs a few shoes samples that he’s supposedly brought to sell.

Well, yesterday, it seems he did it one time too many – and – according to reports, the policeman in the bus called Police in Corozal and a composite patrol.

Our reports say they got to the border just in time because Machado had just checked his items through Customs on the Belize side, and had already checked through immigration. In fact, reports say he was about to pass through the barrier when police pounced on him.

But, their first search of the truck turned up nothing, they looked inside the truck and the trailer and it was clean, he only had a few shelves for his shoes.

That’s when they took it back to the Corozal police station and checked inside the head of the trailer – known as the air dam – where they found 111 kilos of cocaine stuffed in a specially designed hidden compartment. Each cocaine brick weighed in at a little over about 1.1 kilo and each is labeled XT. It has an estimated value of 2.5 million US dollars.

Suspicions are that he trafficked the cocaine from Honduras through Belize back to Mexico. He is being held pending charges and police have the cocaine securely stored.

Charlie and Jambo’s weather report for Saturday

We are late today with the weather…it has been nice and cool and we sleep more than usual. Today is a little overcast, pleasantly cool, very good weather for snoozing.

I think I’ll take a nap.

Charlie and Jambo’s Weather Report for Friday

It’s cool and cloudy this morning. Maybe the sun will come out, maybe it won’t. It’s great weather for napping especially now that we don’t have to worry about hurricanes any more. Jambo and I never even thought about those until we found out that November 30th was the last day of official hurricane season. If someone could remind us in 1 year we’d appreciate it.

Drug Dealers in San Pedro

Obviously there are drug dealers in San Pedro and the main places to find these wonders of human anatomy is around the tackle box dock/Big Daddy’s and Wet Willies on wednesday nights. Surprisingly enough this is not an advertisement for them but a warning in two ways and 1. is that drugs are illegal and 2. drug dealers are not nice people.

Please do not make the mistake of even telling these people where you live or where you are staying as it is highly probable that you will receive a visit especially if you have bought any illegal substances from them.

A few instances recently have led the Ambergris Daily to believe that a spate of burglaries are being committed by these “dealers” as the people who have been burglarized all have a common element and that is of smoking the illicit substances.

This is a warning to all.

Liberty Orphanage Fund Raiser – Dec 11 in San Pedro

Pedro’s Inn and Hotel is holding a huge fundraiser  on sunday december 11 for the Liberty Orphanage House which is situated in Ladyville. Some of the 24 children situated in this orphanage have very strong ties to our local community.

Over the last year Liberty has lost part of its funding and presently has a huge problem with their monthly utility bills. For example the electric bill runs over 3300 bzd per month. The hope is that the fundraiser will be able to pay for 3 months electricity.

it is also hoped that enough money will be raised to buy each of the kids a special meaningful present, and to provide each staff member with a 100bzd bonus which will help them to celebrate xmas. The final monies will be used to bring the children to San Pedro on december 11.

Many people and institutions have offered to help with the Island  Academy  having a sponsored jumpathon. Many local businesses and hotels have donated prizes, and substantial ones at that which people will be able to bid on in the silent auction and purchase raffle tickets. Presently many people are selling bar-b-que tickets for the event and it is asked that everyone buy at least a couple. The price is 12bzd and all profits will go to the fund. 20% of the bar is being donated, and all raffle and auction monies will also be donated.

If you have a prize to donate please contact Cindy @ pedro’s 226-3825.

It is also asked that everyone show up on december 11 and spend a little money of which almost all will go to making sure that these children have a good xmas.

The Difference between Taxies in Mexico and San Pedro

Night and day. The drivers are courteous charge everyone the same amounts. The cars are clean and do not have people breast feeding their kids in the front seat. The air-conditioning units work. They ask you if you want to listen to music and what type. Basically they treat their guests as customers and use the logic that whatever, within reason, that whatever the customer wants the customer gets. Thus believing that they will get tipped a larger sum.

Some but not all San Pedro taxies are dirty disgusting evil smelling vehicles with more rubbish in them than there is  at the local dump. This vehicles should be impounded and checked by the local health authorities to see if they are a health hazard.

This may be an exaggeration but our taxi guys should shape up, and all not just a few should give a good service, and all drivers should be checked by the police and the various associations that legal residents and citizens are driving them, as it appears that there are many illegals driving around collecting fares at night. One of the clues to this as these people do not know San Pedro and can only speak spanish, and appear not to be from Belize.

Charlie and Jambo’s Weather Report

It is going to be  a great day. Jambo and I have made plans to sneak out and rummage through a new tantalizing rubbish bin that is situated just past Mr. C’s furniture store. I will put all the blame on Jambo as I just know Lady Boss will never get annoyed with him for anymore than a nanosecond.

I

The Vet is Back – Dr. J’s Report

Jambo reporting…I have stolen the computer because I have to report that I AM SO EXCITED that THE VET IS BACK!  Charlie and I were so surprised when she arrived last night and stepped out of a taxi.  We ran out of the bar and covered her in sand and sea water because we had just been on our walk!

It is really hard working all day in the clinic as the only doctor.  Even though I am Dr. J and I am totally qualified I don’t like sleeping under Dr. Laurie’s desk all day without her there.

So never fear my fellow canines…the vet is back!  Come on down and see us at San Pedro Animal Hospital.  You may get a shot or a thermometer up your bum but I will make sure you get a chewy or a treat afterwords.
