Great news from the UK both football teams from this city, and I use those words advisably, have been unceremoniously dumped out of the Champions League Cup. This is tremendous news for all those who love football.

Wow! The weather has changed and it is just great. We are definitely going for a long walk today as the boss has piled on the pounds and it is Dumbo’s and my job to make sure they come off as fast as they came on.

Liberty Orphanage Fund Raiser Sunday-Please Come

Liberty provides healing and shelter to abandoned, abused and neglected children from all over the country of Belize. Liberty is supported almost entirely by private donations. With current economic difficulties it’s harder and harder to raise money for even the most deserving of projects. Liberty needs your help.
Last year the Liberty fundraiser at Pedro’s brought in about $17,000 Bz for the kids at Liberty. This year we hope to do as well – but we can only do it if we have support! YOURS !!

Proceeds will go for one special Christmas gift per child (spending $100 Bz per child, and having a generous discount on purchase price from the store); a cash Christmas bonus for each dedicated caregiver, site staffer and teacher at Liberty; and a deposit at BEL for payment of ongoing power bills for the home.
This is all important, all wonderful and all needed. It will only be possible if you pitch in.

Charlie and Jambo’s Weather Report

It is a horrible day and the boss is back and I am not talking to him as he has been gone for a week. I will eventually forgive him but he will have to take me on the golf cart and for a lot of walks.
I think it will rain later and the temperatures are below freezing. It is so lucky that I have my woolly coat on and I therefor do not feel the cold.

Ladies Poker Night a Smashing Success

Last night 12 ladies, most of them novices to the game gathered at Pedro’s Poker Club at 6:30 to learn some poker, partake in some free drinks and pizza, oh and win some money.

Several ladies came early to learn from Jason’s most excellent poker tutorial.  After a short but intense primer, they headed off to the cash table where the game was Fixed Limit Texas Hold’em with a minimum $40 Belize buy-in.  Each and every lady picked up on the game easily and soon were playing like professionals.

Game host Jason Southwell said of the game, “These ladies really know how to have fun.  I didn’t expect the game to go all the way into the next morning, but you have to give credit where it’s due.  They all picked up on the game quickly and kept up the intensity, laughter and new skills all night long.”

Jason also sent out special thanks to Taco Girl (www.tacogirl.com) who live blogged and streamed the event.

Pier Permits

One of Belize’s most sacred traditions is the idea that the sea bed right in front of the beach is public property and not owned by anyone. But, of course, the beach front property up to the beach reserve is always owned by SOMEBODY. At Ambergris Daily we can’t understand how new pier permits are STILL issued by the Government of Belize to people who don’t own the beach front property where they plan to build their pier.

Many people think there are already too many piers especially in and close to town. Surely the San Pedro Town Council and Ministry of Natural Resources need to check that anyone requesting a new pier permit actually owns the property they plan to build the pier on. And, if there is such a pier permit issued but the permit holder (let us call him “The Encroacher”) has not yet built the pier said pier permit should be immediately revoked.

Ambergris Daily knows of one incident where a tenant at a residential condo complex has been issued a pier permit to build in front of the condo building. Remember, this individual is RENTING, he’s not a condo owner. Of course the condo OWNERS are not happy and we can hardly blame them. How can this happen?

Weather for Wednesday

A little cloudy today, very fresh cool air from the north, getting brighter, altogether a great winter’s day on the island! Maybe the temp will just make 80 degrees today…if it only makes 79 degrees so be it, those are the breaks, sometimes you can’t have it all ways. The Boss always thinks these days are too cold but it’s not my fault he doesn’t have a nice white fur coat like me.

Jambo loves this weather too but he’s too stupid to realise it.

RIP Sarah Lawrence

Sarah at 9.30 this morning(Belize time) is being cremated at the Amersham and Chiltern Crematorium in the U.K. It was amazing that so many people have sent messages of support and commiserations, and I know that she would have been very pleased to know that she had made so many friends in Belize.

Ladies Poker at Pedro’s tonight

For the first time there is going to be a Ladies Poker night at Pedro’s. From 6.00pm to 7.00pm there will free lessons on how to play “Texas Hold ‘Em. So it does not matter if you have never played as Jason will teach you.

Drinks and Pizza are being provided so anyone is welcome to come down and see if you are able to win some money, and at the same time have a great time.
