Hope for Kim Cancer Walk nets over $9k

Hope for Kim Cancer Walk

Hope for Kim Cancer Walk

San Pedro Sun | At 5:00am Sunday morning, a lively group of walkers and runners gathered at Central Park where the official Hope for Kim 10-mile walk was set to begin. At the start, several runners took off heading in the pre-determined route up to Boca Del Rio Park and then back down through Middle Street all the way to the 4-Mile marker south of the island and back to the starting point. Walkers followed, in groups or singly, all in solidarity for one of the community’s very own. Kim Reyes is suffering from Kidney Cancer, and all funds raised are to go to help fund her treatments.

At the end of the 10 mile route at Central Park, Michael Del Valle came in first, and he was followed by Kristian Guerrero and Tito Alamilla. Following closely behind was Liliana Nuñez. Other joggers and walkers soon started coming in. For the second year in a row, Michael Del Valle logged in the fastest time.

Organized by Train Station, the walk was considered a great success. Of the 130 ($50) pledges, about 60 actually showed up for the walk. All funds were collected, amounting to a little over $9,000. It is the second of such an activity, with the first being held in honor of the late Mrs. Lydia Guerrero. Lisa Guerrero, owner of Train Station, and one of the participants said, “This is something we want to do every year, and funds raised will go either towards the Cancer Center in Dangriga, or to a community member who is in need of funds for cancer treatment.”

Below find some words of appreciation from Kim Reyes:
As a child I had the image of angelic beings adorned with iridescent wings and golden halos. Surely to be found only in celestial skies, quite impossible to be seen among mere mortals.

I’ve been blessed to have seen these blessed creatures in faces and the smiles and generous acts of the people among me. Although there wear no wings or shiny halos they are radiant in the light of God’s love. Thank you to all who have given their time and donations in any form to aid me in my time of need. You all are truly angels on earth.

/s/ Kim Reyes

Caye Caulker Angler Wins Tres Pescados

Tres Pescados Slam Tournament

Tres Pescados Slam Tournament

Ambergris Today | Team Anglers Abroad, Haywood Curry and guide Ken Coc from Caye Caulker take 1st place in the 2nd annual Tres Pescados Slam Tournament held Thursday August 12th through Saturday August 14th. Along with winning the event’s 1st place trophy, Ken Coc won the “Top Guide” trophy and Haywood Curry will be going to Islamorada, Florida in July 2011 to compete in the IGFA Inshore World Championships representing Belize.

With 14 Pro and Amateur teams registered and set for the competition, 7:00 am on Thursday August 12th arrived and the official start at the pier in Central Park was underway. All of the teams were required to be at the pier each of the 3 days of the event for the 7:00 am start to receive their team’s daily ID number that was required to be in every fish photograph entered for the competition. By 4:00 pm all teams were required to check in back at the tournament headquarters in Central Park.

With volunteers Ben Popik and Tina Winkler checking in anglers and reviewing release photos on the fly, day one results produced over 466 inches of Bonefish and 27 inches of Permit. No tarpon were released on the first day although several were caught and either not landed or under the tournament limits. One team, Shake-N-Bake, had a grand slam this first day that would make anyone proud but unfortunately the tarpon were under the tournament limit.

In the Pro Division, team Shake-N-Bake guided by George Bradley edged out the Anglers Abroad team with guide Ken Coc by 29 points to take the day 1 lead. Both teams had two of the needed species for a slam with a permit and several bones each. Team TFO guided by Cesar Acosta took 3rd place for day 1.

From 3:00 until 6:00 pm tournament events in the park included the Cast-Off ran by Dick Gentry with the community, team members and guides competing for the chance to win a custom built Belize fly rod and other prizes. Entertainment with steel drum and traditional drumming music was provided by Tanya and Zack, two local San Pedro artists that wowed the crowd with their talents on the drums while the San Pedro Lions Club were on hand to providing the drink concession.
