Comprehensive Boating Skills and Seamanship Courses in Belize

Wafagua Nautical and Safety Institute Limited offers well structured, comprehensive Boating Skills and Seamanship Courses that are endorsed by and satisfy the Belize Port Authority legal requirements.

These courses provide life skills that can enable the successful participant to be an entrepreneur or be employable in the Fishing, Tourism or Shipping Industries.

Courses offered include:

  • Master (Captain) License Course Captain Enhancement Course
  • Coastal Navigation Boat Crew (Basic Seamanship)
  • Boating Essentials and the Environment Maritime Communications
  • Marlinspikes (Ropework) Regulations for Prevention of Collisions
  • Safety, Survival and Emergency Procedures Search and Rescue Awareness

These courses which are designed to endure that the mariners become proficient and confident on the water are geared towards those who are complete beginners or the experienced operators who may need to be certified or improve their seamanship skills.

Wafagua Nautical & Safety Institute offers the “COASTAL NAVIGATION COURSE” The course is endorsed by the Belize Port Authority and is designed to will provide the mariners with; the technical skills that will compliment his/her local knowledge of any navigable waters and the ability to navigate any place(s) not plied before. Topics to be covered include:

  1. Introduction to Navigation
  2. Understanding Latitude and Longitude
  3. Nautical Charts Interpretation
  4. Understanding your Magnetic Compass
  5. Position Determination
  6. Distance, Speed and Time Calculation
  7. Dead Reckoning
  8. Bearings and Fixes
  9. Finding Course to Steer & Voyage Planning
  10. Finding Set & Drift and Estimated Positions

The successful completion will also:

  • Reduce or prevent unintentional grounding that damage your vessel’s bottom and propellers.
  • Demonstrate the nature of the bottom thus facilitate anchoring in areas with good holding power, and;
  • Prevent damage to and anchoring on the coral reefs.
  • Enable safe arrival to the intended destination.

WNSI offers the “RULES OF THE NAUTICAL ROAD” Course. The course is endorsed by the Belize Port Authority is designed to provide the mariner with; the fundamental knowledge and technical skills to make better decisions on safety and the prevention of collision at sea. Topics to be covered include:

  1. Application of the Rules
  2. Responsibilities of the Master and/or Owner
  3. Responsibilities of the Lookout
  4. Safe Speed
  5. Risk of Collision
  6. Conduct of vessel in conditions of visibility
  7. Conduct in Narrow Channel
  8. Conduct of vessel in sight of one another (Stand – on & Give Way vessels)
  9. Conduct of vessels in restricted visibility
  10. 10. Vessel Light signals

The course will also ensure that you:

  • Know the various categories of vessels and which vessel has the right of way.
  • Display correct navigation lights at night and during times of restricted visibility;
  • Ensure that Navigation lights are in the right place and displayed appropriate to the vessel size and class.
  • Become proficient and confident on the water.
