Crocodile in Ambergris Lake attacks Pet

Ginger recovers after being attacked by a crocodile

On Christmas Eve day a pet dog owned by Cori Sterrenberg, the manager of Wild Mangoes Restaurant, was viciously attacked by a crocodile at ‘Ambergris Lake’. The dog had made it’s way to the lake through a hole in a neighbor’s fence where the attack occurred.

Ms. Sterrenberg immediately rushed Ginger to the San Pedro Animal Hospital where Veterinarian Laurie Droke operated on her for over 5 hours. Ginger suffered many bite wounds from the attack, including a punctured stomach and a very deep gash on her head (down to the skull).

Fortunately the prognosis for her recovery is good. She is being kept at the San Pedro Animal Hospital for observation. Unfortunately this is the second instance of a crocodile attacking one of Miss Sterrenberg’s pets. Just over a week ago her Boston Terrier Oskar disappeared from the same location, and it is suspected that the same crocodile was the culprit.

These two attacks highlight the dangerous situation that exists in the ‘lake’, where a large and very dangerous predator is allowed to live in close proximity to a residential area. Attempts have been made to re-locate this crocodile further south on the island, however it appears that the crocodile in question has made it’s way back to it’s ‘home’. How long will this dangerous situation be allowed to continue, considering the fact that it very easily could have been a child or person being attacked instead of a pet.
